Information about a MultiMedia channel

Introduction
------------

we tested a MultiMedia channel between PNPI and DESY. The testing was taken place 20th December 1995. On PNPI side we have SGI Indy (with camera, microphone, speakers, etc.). We used nv for the video channel (about 20Kbit). For audio channel we used vat (standard GSM). On DESY side we used SGI Indy too.

Organizational consideration
----------------------------

To establish and test the MultiMedia channel we invited two SPb computer companies: SGI and DEC. DEC and DEC partner OLLY shown Alpha Server 275 MHz. SGI gave SGI Indy station (SPb the company IRI). DEC and OLLY shown also some advertisement info based on DEC Alpha server.

Test Results
------------

We used on both sides (PNPI and DESY) nv to transmit the video; vat for audio; irc and talk for talking. For nv we installed 20 Kbit, in vat we used a standard GSM to transfer an audio information. For nv we used medium size (from range small, medium, large). We found out that audio was good quality. At the same time video was acceptable quality (about 0.2-0.3 fps - frame per second). On DESY side there are several people who were participating in PNPI seminar (Sergei Kulikov, Stanislav Belostotski). The people on DESY side heard the PNPI seminar about half an hour. After that they communicated with Alexei Vorobyov, Lucien Montanet, and other people.

I can add that we used only PNPI 64 Kbit/sec satellite IP line.

COHERENT PION EFFECTS AT LARGE RAPIDITIES IN

                           Abstract

Coherent effects are considered in the model of the pion
bremsstrahlung in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. As a result of
Quantum Mechanical Monte Carlo calculation it is shown that this
mechanism yields pions at large rapidities with the strong coherence.
The coherent enhancement of the cross section has the threshold
character as a function of the number of interacting nucleon pairs.
The coherence narrows regions of pion's transverse momenta towards zero
and longitudinal momenta around some characteristic value.
The pion's pseudorapidities are moved towards the large values.

The seminar dedicated to our new IP channel had a reasonable success. There was about 200 participants. It was shown some video facility in snapshot mode and it was shown audio talking with DESY (Hamburg) over the Internet.

7th October 1995

Dear colleague, we, Computer Systems Department at Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI), are testing and watching the new satellite IP channel to the Internet. This is serious step towards technological base of a New Planet Sphere. It is important event for us and for all scientific society at St.Petersburg.

We plan to open one day seminar dedicated to the our new IP channel. We invite a lot of people from St.Petersburg, Moscow and other cities.

The seminar will take place 17th October 1995 at PNPI (Gatchina) at the main conference hall at 10.30.

4th October 1995

Hot news for us. The satellite antenna was installed at PNPI (8th September 1995) to realize new 64 K/bit IP channel PNPI-DESY in according to the Project INTAS 93-0056. We expect this line will be in the test operation from the end of September 1995.

The new IP line is in test operation from 22th September 1995. The real throughput in ftp is about 6 KByte/sec.

The start set of network equipment was obtained with serious technical help from DESY (Hamburg). A lot of thanks to Juergen May, Hans Frese, Michael Ernst, Hans Dilcher and many others.
