4. SPES-4p

One of the main objectives of the SPES-4p program was to study p(a, a ')X and (,' )X reactions in the region of the Roper resonance. The experiment was performed at the Saturn II accelerator (LNS, Saclay, France) at the 1 GeV/u alpha and polarized deuteron beams. The projectiles (alphas and deuterons) scattered from the liquid hydrogen target were registered in the forward direction by the SPES-4p high resolution spectrometer. In contrast to the previous inclusive experiment, where only the scattered projectiles were registered, in the present SPES-4p experiment the scattered protons and the emitted pions were registered by the Forward Spectrometer (FS). The FS consisted of a wide aperture magnet, six tracking drift chambers and scintillator hodoscope (the drift chambers and the scintillator hodoscope were designed and fabricated at PNPI). The experiment has been successfully performed. The analysis of the data has been completed.
