    Mon Jan 22 12:06:07 MSK 2001

    Dear collegues,
    we spent about 10 days to try new Batch System PBS from NASA. We found serious bug in that system (10 days were spent to find the source of the bug). However the bug might be compensated by special script. We plan to put PBS into operation on the farm this week.
    At the same time we have intensive negotiation with Sun Corp. on the product Sun Gridware (same as CODINE) however with no success.

    Wed Jan 3 14:44:13 MSK 2001

    Dear colleagues,

    yesterday the new disk drive (18GB) was installed on PC Farm. That disk drive was paid by Julich (Vladimir Koptev). The disk divided as usual 1 to 3 by volume (3 to Koptev and 1 to physics community). At the same time Koptev may pretend to public part on temporary bases like all others.
    File system names allocated on the drive are:
    - /koptev01
    - /data02
    Additional computer from Koptev (450 MHz) will come in operation inside the farm soon.

              For everybody who needs for reasonable computing power
              ======================================================

                           For Your Laboratory Information
                           -------------------------------

                                Created: 09.12.1997

                              Corrected: 15.12.1997
                                         03.02.1998
                                         16.03.1998

    As you know we are in progress in developing the Batch Computing Farm
    based on PCs (BCFpc) for High Energy Physics. The farm is now in
    operation from 2nd March 1998. You might see the details at
    "http://www.pnpi.spb.ru/pcfarm/".

    In order to increase the value of our proposal we try to use collaborating
    efforts in project realization.

    It is clear that Batch Computing Facility might be used over the Internet
    as well. That means any laboratory can buy one or more PCs to add to
    current BCFpc installation and to obtain a range of user accounts to use
    whole BCFpc power in batch mode.

    It is clear that BCFpc shall have standard program library configuration
    for HEP (i mean CERNlib and related software).

    An official report on BCFpc usage will be available on regular base (once
    a month or week).

    In this case your laboratory will save man power to maintain the computing
    facility.

    ***** How to be registered on the Batch Computing Farm

    If you feel you need to use Batch Computing Farm for your computing you
    are required to be registered. To do that you need to fill the
    registration form and send it by fax (+7-81271-360-40).
    The pattern of the registration form can be found out in
    "http://dbserv.pnpi.spb.ru/~volkova/".

    ***** How to pay for a PC (PCs)

    To avoid transportation and probably custom problems we use special
    procedure. In contact with our partners we find out a PC and after send
    the offer (invoice) to our partner. When the offer (invoice) will be paid
    we are able to receive the PC and add it to our Batch Computing Farm
    (BCFpc).

    More or less standard configuration we discuss is:

    - Pentium II (fastest);
    - 256 MB main memory;
    - 100 Mbit Ethernet;
    - EIDE disk drive (5-10 GB);
      NO MONITOR - NO KEYBOARD - NO MOUSE .

    In total about $3K per a PC or less (December 1997).

    It might be discussed any other (more advanced) PC configuration and prices.

    Fri Feb 27 18:42:21 MSK 1998

    Уважаемые коллеги,

    в ОФВЭ начала работать новая вычислительная установка (первая очередь проекта BCFpc: смотрите "http://www.pnpi.spb.ru/pcfarm/").

    По откликам, которые мы уже имеем, время выполнения реальных программ (Александр Добровольский, Михаил Левченко) на новой установке примерно в 10 (десять) раз меньше, чем на старой SGI Power Series (rec03).

    Предполагается, что установка будет наращиваться (сейчас три процессора 266 MHz) за счет тех научных проектов и программ, которые выполняются в лабораториях ОФВЭ, а также в дружественных лабораториях, и которые будут пользоваться данным кластером.

    Регистрация на установке производится путем заполнения регистрационного листа, который подписывается директором Отделения. Регистрационный лист находится на странице: "http://www.pnpi.spb.ru/~volkova".

    Для запуска заданий предлагается использовать специальные системы балансировки загрузки компьютерного кластера: CODINE или другие.

    Программы системы CODINE находятся в директории pcfarm:/usr/CODINE/bin/linux/. Параметры команд и подробное описание команд можно получить с помощью man. Анатолий Орешкин (oreshkin@pnpi.spb.ru, телефон 63-56) сможет оказать ограниченную помощь, если остались неясности после прочтения описания.

    Из прикладных систем имеются основные GNU-программы, g77, CERNlib, paw, paw++. Детали можно уточнить у Татьяны Серебровой (tatianas@pnpi.spb.ru, телефон 69-82).

    О других имеющихся возможностях можно уточнить у администратора компьютерного кластера pcfarm (root@pcfarm.pnpi.spb.ru , телефон 63-56).

    С уважением,

    Mon Feb 16 19:28:04 MSK 1998

    Several users were invited to test PC Farm and to compare the throughput with old SGI installation (rec03). We said our PC Farm is in alpha-testing state.

    All users were asked to use the batch system to balance the load among PCs.

    Mon Feb 2 10:02:35 MSK 1998

    Last Friday (January 30, 1998), we discussed again situation with PC farm.

    Alexander Lodkin brought memory chips and 3COM SuperStack II Hub 100 TX. Now we have 128 MB on two satellite PCs and 256 MB on central PC.

    Tatiana Serebrova informed that CERNlib was installed and available on the farm.

    Anatoly Oreshkin installed and tested CODINE batch system. It was seen CODINE distributes the jobs among different PCs in according to load level. Other tests for CODINE will be undertaken soon.

    Victor Barashko informed about some details concerned PC Linux NIS, registration procedure, etc.

    Andrey Shevel informed about his visit to JINR and talking on PC farms at JINR.

    Wed Jan 21 12:46:54 MSK 1998

    Today it was installed Smart UPS 2000.

    Victor Barashko tuned special software for the SmartUPS.

    There is no observable load level on the SmartUPS (two computers and one monitor). In nearest future we plan to add Hub100, third computer, disk subsystem.

    It was checked UPS procedure with shutdown:
    break the power, automatic shutdown and UPS switched off;
    whole automatic restart after restore the power;
    appropriate messages when the power was restored soon after the break (less than 5 minutes).

    Everything is OK.

    Mon Jan 19 16:11:01 MSK 1998

    There were prepared another three scripts to maintain BCFpc www pages:

    1. PCfarm.Contrib - to maintain the page 'Contributors';
    2. PCfarm.Hard - to maintain the page 'Hardware';
    3. PCfarm.Soft - maintain the page 'Software'.

    All three scripts take into account the directory structure "/www/docs/pcfarm".

    Mon Jan 19 13:17:28 MSK 1998

    I have printed today CODINE manuals:
    User Guide
    and Reference Manual.
    In total 460 pages. They are now inserted into two folders in my office. Anatoly Oreshkin may get them from my office.

    Last Friday Alexander Lodkin brought another two PCs (without monitors).

    Victor Barashko has installed Linux on all three computers (PCs).

    Thu Jan 15 12:26:08 MSK 1998

    Today we (Barashko, Lodkin, Leontiev, Serebrova, Oreshkin, Shevel) discussed the current situation with PC Farm.
    Lodkin plans to deliver the equipment (good half) to PNPI tomorrow.
    Oreshkin plans to install and test DQS batch system.
    Leontiev plans to prepare network cables for new PCs.
    Barashko plans to install Linux on another two computers and to test UPS software.
    Serebrova informed that CERNlib is already available under Linux at PNPI. In addition there were discussed PIAF, ROOT, Geant 4, etc.
    Shevel mentioned about MPI and asked to look at registration sheet for the BCFpc.

    Tue Jan 13 12:59:12 MSK 1998

    It is cleaned the space for PC Farm. It is expected this month the space will be prepared (power cables, newtwork cables, etc.).

    Tue Jan 13 12:50:45 MSK 1998

    HEP Division at PNPI paid for the first three computers (PC) for the PC Farm. First computer (PC) was arrivred PNPI 9th January 1998. It is expected all three computers will be at PNPI at the end of January 1998.

    Tue Jan 13 12:28:28 MSK 1998

    12th January and 13th January it was prepared a frame to maintain the www pages for PC Farm project. It means there are (now) several scripts in directory /www/docs/pcfarm: Script "PCfarm.Links" is dedicated to maintain the page 'Links'. The script should be called from directory "/www/docs/pcfarm" on dbserv. Script "PCfarm.HotNews" is dedicated to maintain the page 'Hot News' and 'History'. The script should be called from directory "/www/docs/pcfarm" on dbserv. Both previous scripts invoke an editor 'pico' to edit the source files. Script 'PCfarm.IndexEnd' is dedicated to form the tail for page with name "index.html". It is added date and time when the page was changed. This script is invoked from within "PCfarm.Links" and "PCfarm.HotNews". All scripts take into account the existing directory structure and file names created by Victor Barashko (i mean /www/docs/pcfarm). There were added several additional files:
      /www/docs/pcfarm/index.hist.head
      /www/docs/pcfarm/index.hist
      /www/docs/pcfarm/index.HotNews.Head
      /www/docs/pcfarm/index.HotNews
      /www/docs/pcfarm/index.links

    Those files are important for the scripts described above.

    2nd December 1997

    PNPI HEP scientific board approved 25th November in general our plan to upgrade PNPI HEP computing facility by PC farm.

    Several steps to check CERNlib on SlackWare Linux were undertaken in test installation. CERNlib will be running soon.

    We are looking for an appropriate offer for central PC [Dual Pentium II/300, 256 MB main memory, wide SCSI, 3 x 9 GB disk drives, CD ROM].

    10th November 1997

    A couple of weeks ago we (Andrey Shevel, Alexander Lodkin, Victor Barashko, Anatoly Oreshkin) were discussing the new computing platform for future computing facility in HEP. Andrey Shevel has prepared a kind of proposal on this topic. That proposal is now available on these pages. We are awaiting that many people will have interest for our activity in computing area.

    The name of the proposal is HEP Batch Computing Farm based on PCs (or shorter BCFpc). Suggestions on better name might be discussed.

    HEP means High Energy Physics.

    The logo of the proposal which can be seen at the top left corner of the page is a combination of our institute logo and Linux logo.
