The search for muon catalyzed d3He fusion

The theoretically and experementally discovered formation of d3Heµd-molecules is able to search for muon catalyzed d3He- fusion reaction similar of the d-µ-t fusions:

dµ+3He-->d3Heµ-->4 He(3.66Mev)+p(14.64Mev)+µ

The experimental limit on the d3He-µ-d fusion rate λf≤ 4∙108s-1 was firstly set in Gatchina experiment.
Also, the measurement of the muon transfer rate ( λdHe = 1.24(5) ∙ 108 s-1) from deuterium to 3He at room temperature was performed.

This result confirmed the teoretically predictions about a mesomolecular mechanism of the process muon transition.

The search d3He-fusion was continued on intense muon beem at PSI in 1996 – 1997.

The analysis of the data was able to determine a new upper limit for the d3 He -fusion rate in the 3Heµd -molecule

λf ≤ 6 ∙ 104 s-1 wich is more than three orders of magnitude lower than the previously existed limit.

Also, in this experiment was performed the measurements of the muon transfer rates at low temperatures:

λdHe(39.5 Ê) = 2.33(16) ∙ 108 s-1     λdHe(50 Ê)= 2.32(9) ∙ 108 s-1.

These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
